He has worked for more than 35 years in the structural engineering industry, after completing his post-graduation from Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. After an initial stint of working as a design engineer for 2 years in Hyderabad and teaching for undergraduates for 5 years, he joined Geodesic Techniques in Bangalore.
At Geodesic he has worked initially as head of the design office, during which time he was designer, structural analyzer and software developer all rolled into one. He developed skills in using Autocad for drafting and NISA for structural analysis. Since most jobs at Geodesic were steel intensive design and build, he developed software for post design work to help ease fabrication and construction.
His experience at Geodesic has been multi-faceted, where he has been a leader in practically all aspects of a project, which include concept selling, structural design, fabrication, and construction of projects. In many projects he has been the single point of contact for customers where his responsibilities included all aspects of a project from design to fabrication to construction, and hand over.
At Geodesic he was one of the key members to develop the full technology to realize steel space frames, which were being executed in India with imported technology. Several large space frame structures, which include 3 stadium roofs in Chennai and one stadium roof in Bangalore, were executed using the in-house developed technology. Continuing this technology development, many landmark structures in Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune and Delhi were effectively designed and built with the help of several custom software he developed.
The dome structure for TCS campus in Bangalore, dome for Infosys in Mysore, the egg-shaped software development block (SDB5) for Infosys in Pune, the Inverted funnel shaped roof for Raghu Leela Mall in Mumbai, the dome and barrel vault structures for Nirmal Life style mall in Mumbai, are a few extraordinary and complex structures realized by using software developed by him. He was also involved in the fabrication and construction activities of these projects.
Apart from these projects, he has handled design and construction of 2 large multilevel car parks, a 10-storey 2000 car park structure for Infosys and a 1600 car park structure for Mumbai Airport. A 26-storey steel composite building for MMRDA, Mumbai was another design and build project led by him. The Milan rail over-bridge in Mumbai was a steel composite bridge, whose fabrication and construction were handled successfully by him. A unique construction method was developed to ensure the 61m span bridge with 2 carriageways (each weighing 450 mT and 10m wide), were erected in place with stopping of Mumbai local trains on only 3 days for 4 hours each in the night, over a period of 15 days against an original method of 120 days of stoppage of the local trains.
All major airport steel roofs, in India have been executed by Geodesic where he was one of the key team players. The Delhi domestic terminal roof, the Delhi International terminal roof, the Mumbai International terminal roof and extension to the Bangalore International roof were major steel projects executed by Geodesic. He also played key roles in the execution of Indore and Rajahmundry airport roofs. Apart from these he was the project director for execution of the steel roof at Raipur airport.
During the period of association with Geodesic from 1989 to 2017, he has been able to contribute in a very positive manner to the growth of Geodesic as a technological company in the structural engineering field. He is well versed with structural engineering from design to construction, with hands on experience and also as a leader.
He was on the Board of Directors at Geodesic for about 15 years as a professional director. As a board member he participated in all the board meetings. He has also conducted and participated high level meetings in the company’s activities such as business development, HR, financial aspects of projects such as profitability, billing, collections, fortnightly and monthly reviews (both technical and financial) etc.
He is also well versed in the nuances of contract administration due to his experience in handling all aspects of several projects. His experience includes representing the company in several arbitration cases and was able to successfully represent and argue for the company’s case.
As an acknowledged expert in his field, he has been invited to address students of architecture and engineering colleges. He has also been invited speak in front of distinguished professionals in the industry at various forums and seminars.
His breadth and depth of knowledge across a broad spectrum of subjects have proved be one of the strengths at Geodesic.
He has retired from Geodesic in April 2017 and is now working as an individual consultant.
